the lakefront home
everyone needs a house on the lake
The cottage overlooking sparkling Farwell Lake had been in the “A” family for years. It had gradually fallen out of use and into disrepair, but in 2009 a family member saw its potential as a place for a relaxing weekend getaway. He envisioned a fun, yet cozy, home where kids could play and adults could get away from it all. Not only that, but it had to support year-round living if the desire arose.
It didn’t take long to begin the transformation. The entire house was stripped to the studs, and entirely new electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems were installed. An old, attached garage was converted into living space, and the room above the garage became a private mother-in-law suite. We carved a bedroom, bathroom, rec-room, and second kitchen out of the walk-out basement, making a kid-friendly space that is perfect for frequent trips to the shoreline and back. Meanwhile, the entire main level of the existing house was turned into a wide open entertainment-friendly space, with the primary kitchen and living room flowing comfortably together under vaulted ceilings. Large windows overlook the lake, and patio doors lead directly onto the deck. Outside, a large deck spans the width of the house, with glass railings allowing for uninterrupted views. In the center of the deck, a wood-burning fireplace with a stone chimney provides just enough warmth for cool evenings.
As the house construction drew to a close, we began to build an entirely new two car, two story garage between the house and the road. Working on the narrow lake lot was a challenge! The upstairs of the garage was constructed for a future apartment, including a private balcony.
